so, here’s the thing. i love this pair of gifs. and here’s why.

put everything you know about sherlock the show out of your head. you know nothing. all you have to go on is this pair of gifs.

sherlock is shown against a day-lit, outdoor scene. real world. light. he lifts his gaze to meet yours, his eyes wide and unguarded. his face is mobile and soft, he looks younger than he is.

john is shown in darkness, with just blurs of light in the background. you can’t tell where he is. the lighting is low-angled, harsh. he doesn’t look at you, in fact, you can tell he’s not looking at anything, but rather is staring stolidly at nothing. john’s gaze is about *avoidance*. his mouth is a thin set line, and every facial muscle is rigid. the only motion is the flex of his throat. he looks older than he is.

okay. one of these men is the audience’s point of access to the other - a sort of emotional interpreter between the other character and the exterior world, both in-story and meta to the story. based only on what you can glean from these two gifs, i want you to guess which man is supposed to the accessible one.
